A staircase is structure, circulation and the first thing anybody sees. It is also governed by the Ontario Building Code for rise, going, headroom and guarding, which limits how far it can be changed.
What’s included
- Replacing treads, risers and worn nosings
- Curing squeaks and re-wedging loose strings
- New balustrades, spindles, newel posts and handrails
- Glass and metal balustrade systems
- Open-tread and cut-string conversions where regulations allow
- Stripping, sanding, staining and painting
- Carpet removal and timber restoration
- Understairs opening-up and storage
How the work runs
Rise, going, headroom and guarding are checked against current regulations before any change is agreed. Squeaks are fixed from underneath where there is access, because surface fixes for a squeak last about a month.
